Why the CLB 7 → CLB 9 gap matters for Express Entry

Under the CRS (Comprehensive Ranking System), CLB 7 in all four skills gives you 64 CRS points (16 per skill). CLB 9 in all four skills gives you 128 CRS points (32 per skill).

That is a 64-point difference — often the gap between receiving an ITA and not. If you are anywhere near CLB 7, pushing to CLB 9 is the single highest-ROI action you can take for your Express Entry profile.

The same principle applies to PTE Academic for Australia PR points. Whether you need a PTE 65 strategy, PTE 79 strategy, or a PTE 90 strategy, targeted practice on your weakest skills gives the biggest improvement.

Stuck at a score plateau?

Many test-takers plateau just below their target. If you are stuck at 65, stuck at 72, or stuck at 58, a diagnostic test can pinpoint exactly which skills to focus on.

Frequently asked questions

No. PTE Core and PTE Academic are different tests made by Pearson. PTE Core is designed specifically for Canada immigration (IRCC) and maps to CLB levels. PTE Academic is designed for university admissions and other countries' immigration (Australia, New Zealand, UK). They have different tasks — for example, PTE Core has 'Write Email' and 'Respond to a Situation' instead of 'Write Essay' and 'Re-tell Lecture'. You cannot use one in place of the other.

No. IRCC does not accept PTE Academic for Express Entry or most permanent residency programs. You need PTE Core, IELTS General Training, or CELPIP General for Canada immigration. PTE Academic is accepted by most Canadian universities for admission — but not by IRCC for immigration purposes.

No. The Australian Department of Home Affairs does not accept PTE Core. For Australian skilled migration (subclass 189, 190, 491) and student visas, you need PTE Academic. PTE Core is only accepted by IRCC (Canada).

PTE Core is generally considered slightly less demanding than PTE Academic because it tests everyday English communication rather than academic English. The writing task is an email (practical, everyday format) rather than an essay (academic argumentation). However, the speaking and listening difficulty is comparable. If you need a high CLB (9+), PTE Core is still challenging.

The minimum for Federal Skilled Worker is CLB 7 in all four skills. Federal Skilled Trades requires CLB 5 in Reading and Writing, CLB 5 in Speaking and Listening. Canadian Experience Class requires CLB 7 (NOC TEER 0/1) or CLB 5 (NOC TEER 2/3). Higher CLB scores earn more CRS points: CLB 7 = 16 points per skill (64 total), CLB 9 = 32 points per skill (128 total) — a 64-point gap that can make or break an ITA.
